Current Conditions and Seasonal Outlook for Virginia Beach Inshore Fishing
Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel - Northampton, VA
The waters around Norfolk and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel are beginning to wake up. As the water temperatures climb into the high 50s and low 60s, we are seeing the first consistent signs of the spring migration. This is the window many local anglers wait for all winter—the arrival of the heavy-hitters.
Red Drum and Black Drum Update The "Bull" Red Drum have started their move into the shoals. We’ve had success recently using large natural baits along the channel edges. The Black Drum are also showing up in force near the islands of the CBBT and the inner bay reefs. These fish are providing a serious test of tackle, with many of the early-season catches pushing the 40-to-50-inch mark.
What to Expect in the Coming Weeks As we move deeper into the spring, the variety will only increase. While the Drum are the main focus right now, we are keeping a close eye on the temperature for the first signs of Cobia. The "shoulder season" is currently offering some of the most rewarding fishing of the year because the boat traffic is still light, giving us our pick of the best spots without the summer crowds.
Top Producing Techniques
Targeting Structure: We are finding the most success fishing near submerged rock piles and bridge pilings.
Tackle: Light to medium-heavy tackle is our go-to, allowing for a great fight while still having the backbone to move these larger fish away from the pylons.
